Day 1: Arrival Early to Entebbe International Airport to travel via Kampala – Kasese 9-Days-Rwenzori Mountaineering Hiking Safari will start with arrival at Entebbe International airport by morning flight, transfer to Kasese via Fort Portal for lunch enroute at Garden Restaurant; proceed from Fort Portal along the Rwenzori Mountains Ranges towards to near Queen Elizabeth National park, arrive at your Hotel to refresh, later dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Nyakalengija 1600m – Nybitaba Hut 2652m Nyabitaba hut. After your breakfast head for 9-Days-Rwenzori Mountaineering Hiking Safari to the Park Head Quarters at Nyakalengija 1.646 m, where the briefing by the park head guide who will enlighten the participants on how the activity of this day will be carried out and if you do not have the equipment there is a possibility to hire equipment for use, however if you have this is optional. Begin the hike through the plantations and homes stades to the Bakonjo, called the people of the mountain, gradually reaching to garden plots and elephants tall grass. Follow the Mobuku River, till crossing it from Mahoma River. The trail passes through an open broken fern slopes and Podorcarpus Forest, up to Nyabitaba Hut, 2.652 m, which is the arrival point for the day. This walk on this day 1 of the 9-Days-Rwenzori Mountaineering Hiking Safari will take 5 to 6 hours to the hut. From the location, you are facing on the North of the Portal Peaks, 4.627m. and in front Mount Kyniangoma. During the walk, their could be opportunity to spot some monkeys, the Rwenzori turaco. The hiking safari of the Rwenzori begins from this point
Day 3: from Nyabitaba Hut 2650m – John Matte Hut 3414m The trail from Nyabitaba drops down through the forest to the Kurt Shafer Bridge, just below the confluence of the Bujuku and Mubuku Rivers. A steep ascent through bamboo forest, traversing a long and exhausting stretch of slippery moss-covered rock; From Nyamileju rock shelter, on clear days, Mount Stanley and Mount Speke can be glimpsed before passing into the zone of the giant heather, lobelia and groundsel. The final stretch to the hut is across a tiring bog, the first of many for which the mountain is infamous
Day 4: John Matte Hut (3414m) – Bujuku Hut 3972m Immediately after John Matte Hut, the trail drops down to cross the Bujuku River and enters Lower Bigo Bog, home of giant lobelias. Jumping from tussock to tussock, the bog is finally crossed but rarely without the feet sampling some of the freezing ooze below. The Upper Bigo bog gives way to Bujuku Lake, with views of Mt Baker to the South and Mt Stanley to the West. Bujuku Hut, well located in the shadow of Mount Baker and Mount Speke, is set in a narrow valley below Stuhlmann Pass. A spectacular setting but it can be very cold, even for the Rwenzori
Day 05: 4 Bujuku Hut 3900m- Elena Hut 4541m From Bujuku Hut you climb through moss draped groundsel vegetation, to Scott Elliot Pass, 4.372 m; between Mt. Baker and Stanley. Here you divert to Elena Hut, 4.540 m. for spending the night before climbing Mt. Stanley.
Day 6: Elena Glacier – Stanley Plateau The Elena glacier to the Stanley Plateau where crampons may be required; Cross this in Elena Hut 4541m – Punta Margherita 5109 m. – Elena Hut 4541m- Kitandara Hut, 4.023 m. Elena Hut to Margherita peak (5109m) then down Elena Hut 4541m . Early morning traverse of a NW direction and follow the Margherita glacier to the cool and to the summit (3 hours). Descend to Elena Hut and after you descend to Upper Kitandara lake and through thick mud to Lower Kitandara lake where is located Kitandara Hut, 4.023 m. Time to complete the hike about 03 hours more; From Kitandara Hut you can proceed for climbing Mount Baker or Mount Luigi di Savoia and the peak Vittorio Sella.
Day 7: Kitandara Hut – Guy Yeoman Hut, 3.261 m From Lake Kitandara you climb to Fresh field Pass, 4.282 m., and a long flat of high alpine mossy glades, before descending the circuit among rocky and boggy areas. The panorama is dominated by the glaciers of Mounts Stanley and Baker and Mount of Savoy. A muddy trail leads to Akendahi, Bujongolo and Kabamba rock shelters, where starts the Kabamba valley down to Guy Yeoman Hut, 3.261 m. This can take up to 06 hours. The hut is surrounded by a beautiful landscape of mountains, vegetations and rivers.
Day 8: Guy Yeoman Hut – Nyabitaba hut Drop very steeply alongside the Mobuku River, past Kichuchu, another rock shelter and join our original route near the confluence of the Bujuku River (3.1/2 hours).
Day 9: Nyabitaba – Nyakalengija base camp Nyabitaba Hut to the Nyakalengija road head (2-hours). Descend steeply off the ridge and notice enter the warm rainforest. Look for the tropical forest birds and monkeys. Car leaves Kampala to pick Guests Drive back to Entebbe or Kampala, having lunch on the way.
Important information for you to note for this 9-Days-Rwenzori Mountaineering Hiking Safari: Climbers must be prepared to walk for up to 08 hours every day via steep cliff and muddy paths. Climbers must bring along their own climbing gear or hire it at the base camp. Our porters carry 8 kg of personal climbing gear.
Extra Charges for Extra Days In case of more extra day/s needed will call for top up on cost USD250 per day per person – includes park fees, porters fees, guide fees, accommodation, food, hiking and entrance fees Climbing to the Peaks: Megharita/ Stanley /Speke/Alexandria. -2 more extra days will be needed. -This means that the whole journey/ trip will require 11/12 days -Uganda Wildlife Authority is the in charge of the hiking here. Trekking Notes:
- Trekking starts on from Ibanda (starting point) but for big group it may not be so specific.
Departure from Kampala will be a day before or Early in the morning from Entebbe. Safari start and end from Entebbe Required for Hiking Clients will carry hiking shoes, sleeping bags, warm clothes, Climbing to the peaks will require ice axe, mountain boots, crampons, ropes and prior arrangements, rubber boots. Mountain hiking takes place throughout the year, however during months of April, May, October and November experience more rains but this does not stop hiking activities.
